  13. Zamyatin is best known for the brilliant dystopian novel _We_, one of
  14. the great classics of science fiction.  _The Dragon_ is a collection of
  15. fifteen of his short stories (including a 67 page novella) published
  16. between 1918 and 1935.  It also includes an introduction by the
  17. translator, Mirra Ginsburg, and the text of the letter Zamyatin wrote
  18. to Stalin in which he asked to be allowed to "go abroad ... with the
  19. right to return as soon as it becomes possible in our country to serve
  20. great ideas without cringing before little men".  The stories are all
  21. tales of everyday life before, during and after the revolution, but
  22. are rather hard to classify further -- "realist fairy tales", perhaps.
  23. In any case _The Dragon_ is a collection of literary importance as
  24. well as being a great read; worth going out of your way for.
